Flo Mackey
I have always had a keen interest in all forms of art. As a child I would sit and draw for hours on end. My most memorable gift from my parents was an Art Set that had pencils, crayons, charcoals, pastels and paints. I was in heaven, I couldn’t wait to get started.
Today, I think my pieces reflect who I am; how I see the world, what is important to me and what I find beauty in. The subject of my next piece is usually determined by my seeing something and saying to myself, “Wow I love that, it is so stunning”.
Nature is a gift, it is both fascinating and reassuring at the same time. Nothing relaxes and revitalizes me more than a hike in the mountains, a walk through the park or meandering down a long stretch of beach. I love the outdoors, the vibrant colours, textures and little surprises that it offers are such a pleasure to experience and to capture on canvas.
But I also love objects that have been created by man, items that are colourful, structurally interesting, reflect light and draw me in. I often find myself choosing items that have been around for many years as subjects for my paintings, I just know they are aching to share their stories and I try to do this through my art. The vintage chandelier hanging in my dining room, antique perfume bottles, the tea set my husband and I purchased at one of our first antique auctions. These are the things I love to have around me and that I love to paint.
I am still finding my way when it comes to the mediums and subject matter that I choose. Currently I work in Oils and love the movement of it on my canvas. Sometimes I use my brushes, sometimes I use my pallet knives. But down the road, who knows, I hope I never stop trying new things.
